Beasts of Urnes ;    Woman and Horse    Twin Birds

Bev Ulsrud Van Berkom works in a variety of media including oil, watercolor, ink, itaglio and silkscreen. She studied at the University of Minnesota and Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Her work has been exhibited through much of the United States and also northern Europe. Several articles and two books on art and mythology have been published under her name. The original acrylics and limited edition silkscreens featured on this site are based on her interpretation of the ancient Migration styles of ornamentation.

"Life has, for a long time now, reminded me of tapestry," Van Berkom observes, "to be added to day by day, year by year. So my work resembles a tapestry that goes on, continually changing."

While she seeks this sort of order in her work, the pattern is not perfect - like life. There are irregularities in the border designs, a drop of ink on a golden tendril, uneveness in the blue of the background. She works with primitive instruments on purpose, preferring signs of the artist's touch to mechanical perfection.
